Wagwan G, What’s your Name ?

BABAYO OLUWATOBI AMIR A.K.A DJ COMBS

What can you tell us about yourself bro ?

I’m 25 years old. I was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria where I live currently. I have a degree in Philosophy from University of Lagos.

What’s your Craft ?

I’m an Urban DJ. I specialize in all types of events and parties.

What’s your personal ideology ?

Life is now. I try to live in the moment, be as happy as I can and do my best because I only have now.

What Inspired you to be a disc jockey ?

Growing up as the only son of my mother, I was exposed to a lot of Fuji music because she had a pub where a lot of music was usually played. I immediately fell in love with the way the Fuji musicians switched up from one chorus to another non stop. Listening to a lot of foreign music has also set me aside from my peers.

I was inspired by the way the DJs mixed songs with different tempos so effortlessly and this pushed me to find out exactly how it was being done.

What were your challenges ?

Some of the major challenges I faced was lack of funds, equipment and also how the DJ industry is not held in high esteem in the music industry despite the fact that without the DJs the music would not be heard.

What was your creative direction ?

My key responsibility is to read the crowd which would enable me thrill them to the taste of the music required for the event and this has always served as a sort of beacon for me. My goal is to always uplift the perception of music not just locally but globally.

I remember I used to stay up at night listening and writing down songs from DJ Caise of Beat99.fm and also practice finger testing from DJ Neptune. I was particularly inspired by the way the DJs mixed different songs, this pushed me to find out what it was and how exactly it was been done perfectly. I was simply fascinated. Also listening to DJ Premier and DJ Envy also helped create a sense of versatility of music.

I started out in 2012 as a house genre DJ for Unilag FM and this played a major role in my creative direction in music but then I switched up to hip hop/trap then finally indigenous Nigerian music as the demand required and this helped shape me into the versatile DJ I am today.

How long have you been in the game ?

It’s been close to seven years.

Since working with Unilag FM in 2012, I’ve served as in house DJ in places like Q Lounge in Surulere, Memento/ Ace Lounge, Mente De Moda/ Grill at the Pent, Beach Nite At Cova in Mega Plaza amongst others.

I’ve also been the official DJ for Konami, a celebrity charity football since its inception in 2016. Being the official tour DJ for Dremo of DMW was a great milestone as I had to DJ at 10 universities in Nigeria.

While working, I devoted my spare time into curating some of my favorite mixes into playlists and they have been released on platforms like SoundCloud and some major Nigerian blogs.

How many projects do you have out ?

My first project Titled Disturbing Lagos vol1 was released in 2016, it featured hit songs like Bourdillon don & Jamaican girl that instantly created a sensation. Subsequently, I have released other projects which include:

  • TRAP OUT THE BANDO mix
  • PG R&b MIXX
  • NIGHTLIFE IN LAGOS
  • DISTURBING LAGOS
  • BEST OF HOUSE
  • BEST OF DREMO Disc.1 DMW SERIES
  • SUMMER MIXX 1/2

It’s been real bro, thanks for the interview. How can you be reached ?
